Introduction

Structural engineers are the architects of the nation and play a pivotal role in transforming the national blueprint in to reality.  Presently, they are engaged in the vital task of reconstruction of cyclone and earthquake ravaged areas of the country as well as understanding the design and construction of the infrastructural facilities to the nation. The challenges posed toady are the design and execution of tall and long span structures subjected to extremely large impact and explosive forces, development of new constriction materials, construction techniques and computer based tools for analysis and design to meet the challenges of the new millennium.

International Conference on Innovative World of Structural Engineering (ICIWSE-2010), therefore, aimed at creating a knowledge base relating to latest innovations in structural Engineering across the Globe. The conference is organized by the Department of Applied Mechanics, Government College of Engineering (GECA)

Aims of Conference

The objective of the ICIWSE-2010 is to bring together researchers and practitioners around the world in the broad fields of structural engineering who use the knowledge and methodology, perform experiments and of course those who do both, in all areas of structural engineering to discuss and review recent results and ideas and understanding in these areas, share the latest developments and address the challenges that the present and future pose. It is hoped that the cross fertilization between theory and practice that is anticipated will promote defiantly a better understanding of structural behaviour ,facilitate more and more realistic material and structural modeling, which leads to enhance the confidence of structural engineering practice. The forthcoming conference will provide a good opportunity to take stock of progress over the past decade and to agree on priorities for the next decade.

It is expected to provide a platform for various researchers, Consultants, academicians from all over the world to discuss and disseminate information regarding new and upcoming frontiers addressing the major challenges and encompassing broad themes indicated below.

The Department of Applied Mechanics

Applied Mechanics Department is one of the pioneering departments of the institute. It is entrusted with teaching Engineering Mechanics subject to all the disciplines, Strength of Materials to Civil and Mechanical Engineering and subjects related to Structural Analysis and Design to Civil Engineering Students. The department also conducts post graduate course in Structural Engineering of two years duration on regular basis. The department is also recognized as a Research Centre for carrying out Ph D programmes.

Facilities for testing building materials such as cement, brick, aggregates, concrete, steel etc. are available in the department. Advanced softwares on Structural Analysis and Design are available at the Computer Centre of the Department. These facilities are being used for providing consultancy services to various private and Government organizations. The faculty in the department is actively involved in research and development and generating revenue for the institute and Govt. of Maharashtra.

Who Should Attend

The conference is intended for civil and structural engineers, architects and associated professional concerned with the state-of-the-art design, construction, monitoring and performance of the structures, e.g. building and bridges. Participant will therefore represent consultants, researchers, contractors, academicians and regulatory authorities.
